Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) in Children: What Parents Should Know

Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic allergic condition that affects the esophagus: the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. It’s increasingly recognized in children and can significantly impact eating, growth, and overall quality of life. Here’s what parents should understand.

What Is Eosinophilic Esophagitis?

EoE occurs when a type of white blood cell called an eosinophil builds up in the lining of the esophagus. This usually happens as a reaction to certain foods or environmental allergens. Over time, the inflammation can make the esophagus stiff or narrow, leading to difficulty swallowing.

Common Symptoms & Causes of Eosinophilic Esophagitis in Children

EoE is usually triggered by an allergic response, most often to certain foods like:

  • Dairy
  • Eggs
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Nuts
  • Environmental allergens like pollen or dust.

It’s more common in children with asthma, eczema, or other allergies.

Common symptoms include:

  • Feeding difficulties (especially in younger children)
  • Vomiting or abdominal pain
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Food getting stuck

Some children may also change how they eat, like chewing a lot, eating slowly, or avoiding certain foods, so symptoms can be easy to miss.

Diagnosis, Treatment & Living With EoE

Diagnosis: Done with an upper endoscopy and biopsy to confirm inflammation.

Treatment:

  • Avoid trigger foods (elimination diet)
  • Medications like PPIs or swallowed steroids
  • Dilation if narrowing occurs

Living With It: Ongoing management is key: track symptoms, follow the care plan, and make sure your child gets proper nutrition with regular doctor visits.
